Polish online retailer Allegro steps up momentum

Online marketplace Allegro is a huge success story in Poland, where it ranks as the country’s fifth most visited website and largest non-food online retailer. A measure of the company’s popularity is the more than 13 million views that its Christmas 2016 TV commercial received on YouTube.

Now Allegro is set to grow even further thanks to the backing of new owners who will invest in the shopping platform’s technology and expand the range of product categories available to users. These owners are the private equity firms Cinven, Permira and Mid Europa Partners. The EBRD joined the consortium of buyers with a €114 million debt and equity investment.

The planned expansion of Allegro will benefit local businesses in Poland by increasing their customer reach. It will also provide consumers with a wider choice and more competitive prices.
